We are already gathered, 2023- ongoing
paper masks, correspondence
Each mask is printed with an image from the LAION-5b dataset, a collection of images that has been used to train a variety of different generative artificial intelligence models, including Stable Diffusion. I contacted the people in each image and invited them to offer (a) a description of who they would like to wear their mask at an event and (b) a prompt of what they would like those gathered at the event to generate for them. At a series of gatherings, participants chose masks and we worked together to create responses for the people whose images we wore. The photographs are pixelated for privacy purposes.
